Agri-Food Discovery Place (AFDP)
In addition to our experience leading large industrial projects, Laporte has supported scale-up projects from benchtop to pilot and from pilot to commercial scale. We supported the design and installation of one of the world's few high-volume Cellulose Nanocrystals pilot plants for Alberta Innovates – Technology Futures (now, InnoTech Alberta). We also led the commercial scale-up of a facility to produce colloidal oat extract and beta glucan for Ceapro in Edmonton, Alberta.
Based on our industry specialization, we have formed close working relationships with academic and government research institutions that support the agri-food and bio-chemical sectors. These institutions include Agri-Food Discovery Place (AFDP) in Edmonton. This pilot plant facility is part of the Agricultural Food & Nutritional Science Department at the University of Alberta. The facility provides scale up fee for service through applied research for University Academics, Alberta Agriculture & Forestry and for industry clients. AFDP supports five research platform technologies which include:
- Meat Safety & Processing (level 2 containment)
- Carcass & Meat Science
- Natural Health Products & Functional Food
- Animal Nutrient & Ingredient Development (including petfood formulation and extrusion)
- Fermentation for optimization and scale up of level 1 microorganism
Laporte Engineering works closely with AFDP, University of Alberta Academics and industry clients to optimize and scale up technologies for field and clinical trials. AFDP works closely with the Leduc Food Process Development Centre for innovation of market-ready food products.
This unique partnership enables the science behind proof of concept product development to be applied with innovative, practical and cost effective solutions. As the preferred supplier of engineering services to AFDP, we are familiar with the AFDP facility and processes contained therein, with the application of the latest process technologies, and with Canadian and international food safety regulations.
