Laporte is looking to fill the following position for the Toronto office.

Intermediate Electrical Engineer – Toronto, ON

The Intermediate Electrical Engineer will join the Canada Electrical and Controls team and report to the Lead Electrical Engineer. They will be asked to perform the following:


  • Leading the engineering design, procurement, implementation and commissioning of electrical and power system scope for greenfield or brownfield projects of varying size and complexity;
  • Assuming the role of Engineer of Record, including for building permit applications and other regulatory processes;
  • Providing formal design reviews for the work of other members of the electrical team, be a subject matter expert;
  • Mentoring engineers, technologists, and designers, including supervision, and training;
  • Modelling medium and low voltage (25kV and below) electrical distribution systems in SKM;
  • Performing engineering studies including grounding, arc flash, short circuit, and coordination;
  • Interpreting engineering specifications, resolving design and field engineering coordination challenges;
  • Developing, coordinating and preparing project specifications;
  • Conducting technical research related to electrical systems;
  • Coordinating with equipment manufacturers and suppliers;
  • Reviewing shop drawings for conformity with equipment specifications;
  • Taking part in the development of proposal, engineering and construction cost estimates and schedules;
  • Contributing proactively to client relationship, business development, and networking initiatives;
  • Working collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary design team.

Key Requirements:

  • BS or MS degree in Electrical Engineering;
  • 5-10 years of relevant experience in engineering consulting;
  • Professional Engineer designation in ON, or eligibility;
  • Professional work experience as an Electrical Engineering consultant in the agri-food, pharmaceutical or food and beverage industries (other industry may be considered depending on skills and experience); Familiarity with food safety an asset;
  • Strong oral and written communications skills with internal and external stakeholders;
  • Ability to travel to project sites;
  • Able to follow safety regulation and guidelines.

Technical Skills and Proficiencies:

  • Proficient in leading and managing detailed design, procurement, construction support and commissioning;
  • Proficient in using power analysis tools such as SKM PowerTools and/or ETAP;
  • Proficient in conducting engineering studies including grounding, arc flash, short circuit, and coordination;
  • Experience in design for primary services, substations, power distribution systems and motor control systems;
  • Strong knowledge of local, Provincial and National regulations and standards related to electrical design;
  • Good knowledge of electrical utility standards and design criteria;
  • Proficient with AutoCAD, Revit, and /or Eplan an asset.
