Junior Mechanical Engineer – US Offices

Laporte Consultants is looking for a Junior Mechanical Engineer to support our team throughout the United States near our Columbus, Chicago, Philadelphia, Rochester or Raleigh offices. The ideal candidate will have 0-3 years of experience in the design and construction of plant & HVAC systems in the pharmaceutical, life sciences or food & beverage industries and will be able to support manufacturing plant building systems.

Junior Mechanical Engineer – Chicago (IL), Columbus (OH), Philadelphia (PA), Rochester (NY), Raleigh (NC)

Responsibilities and Duties:

Reporting to the mechanical engineer manager, the engineer will be responsible to support the mechanical engineering requirements decided by the mechanical lead on a project.

  • Sizing calculations for pumps, HVAC systems, piping, and ductwork
  • Record meeting minutes
  • Support the development of conceptual, preliminary, and detailed designs, drawings and specifications for the following systems:
    • HVAC
    • Dust collection
    • Controls
    • Plumbing
    • Chilled water
    • Steam
    • Compressed air
    • Specialty gases
    • Bottled gases
  • Support the writing of technical reports and analysis to support design submissions
  • Review shop drawings for compliance & participate in development of engineering standards
  • Visit and survey project sites for project related activities
  • Process, utilities and mechanical designs (estimated 50% of workload)
  • Develop a detailed understanding of local codes and standards applicable to industry and projects
  • Suggest, contribute and provide initiatives to improve the firm’s operations and procedures

Key requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering (building systems or thermodynamic and heat transfer is preferred)
  • 0-3 years of experience in the building industry
  • Curiosity and drive to build a strong knowledge of mechanical design for the pharma and food industry is a must.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent communication skills – verbal, written, listening and interpersonal with the ability to transfer knowledge to others
  • Desire to obtain State (PE) is an asset
  • Knowledge of regulatory compliance requirements
  • Leadership, relationship management, and organizational planning and project management skills, in addition to technical knowledge
  • Capability to engage and energize others to reach their fullest potential and performance
  • Open-minded versatility in disciplines other than the one academically trained for is highly desired
  • Proficiency in using the Microsoft Office Suite, Autocad, Revit an asset
  • Flexibility to travel to manufacturing sites as needed
